Phlebotomy Courses
Phlebotomy courses have to be passed to work in a hospital, private clinic or laboratory as a phlebotomist. They are necessary to get Phlebotomy certification which is helpful, if not necessary, to get jobs as phlebotomists. There are many institutes in different regions of the world that offer different courses of phlebotomy pertaining to their needs and demands. These courses include both theory and practice. There is also a specific time period for the courses. The institutes for Phlebotomy training, schools and other associations give certificates to qualified people after they have completed a certain training course.
All Phlebotomy courses, less or more, include, in theoretical and training:
- Anatomy and physiology (study of human body)
- Study of blood and cells (how blood is obtained from the patient, skills of vein Puncturing, and treatment of different patients as per requirement)
- Procedures of blood sampling (analyzing and diagnosing the obtained samples, and labeling them with patient’s information for identification purposes)
- Laboratory safety (learning safety measures to save himself and other related people from getting infected)
- Many Phlebotomy courses are including CPR to prepare the phlebotomists for different unexpected situations.

After learning all these aspects theoretically, the Phlebotomists have to do internship in some hospital, medical laboratory or some private doctor’s clinic. During training they work practically under the supervision of skilled doctors and Phlebotomists for a specific time. They learn dealing with patients, puncturing veins and skin to get blood sample, handling the apparatus in the lab, sterilizing them, analyzing the obtained samples and after the process is complete, properly disposing them of.
There are some other courses that may be included in Phlebotomy courses in some institutes, such as professional attitude and behavior and other legal issues. Now a days computer are playing a great role in every field, so computer training can also be the part of Phlebotomy courses at some places.
Besides having a GED or high school diploma, it is required to pass a phlebotomy program of one semester or one year diploma. But the length of course and other requirements differ from institute to institute and place to place. In some regions training of one day to six months is required after completing a particular course. And in some it ranges from four months to twenty four months. National organizations give certificates after analyzing their competence in their field.
At some places the theoretical learning certificates are not needed, but the practice in this field is necessary. But theoretical learning is becoming necessary to make this course a structured one. After the completion of the course and training in some hospital or with some private doctor, phlebotomists get jobs in hospitals and other medical care centers. They are also hired by institutes to train other phlebotomists.
So there is a range of courses offered by a number of institutes, available for those who want to be professional phlebotomists. They have a variety to choose from. It is up to them to choose the best according to their requirements.
